Artificial insemination:
“Artificial insemination is a methodology whereby semen is introduced
into a woman's reproductive system through biological methods that prevent
sexual ejaculation in the woman's vagina.”
About 10% of all married couples
are unable to conceive and having a child. Of these, 40% are due to male
infertility and the remaining 60% is due to woman infertility.
REASON
OF INFERTILITY IN MAN:
Some males
are unable to produce sperms. In some male partner the production of sperm is
very less to fertilize their partner. A sufficient amount of sperm is produced,
but the sperm are not sufficiently motile to pass through the vaginal canal and
into the fallopian tubes. As a result, they have a lower chance of reaching and
piercing an ovum. Some neurological aspect make
the excretion impossible. Impotence due to disease such as diabetes mellitus. In
these circumstances, artificial-insemination can help the male partner overcome
childlessness.
REASON
OF INFERTILITY IN WOMEN:
A vaginal
environment that is biologically inhospitable to sperm. An unusually small cervical opening that
prevents further progressive of the sperm. In some women uterine position is abnormal In
these cases, artificial insemination is a suitable aid to conceive. In the
second and third instances, artificial insemination may be used to deliver the
sperm to an advantages position for fertilization, a position they otherwise
might not reach their own accord.
HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION:
The artificial insemination is not a new idea. It’s concept was found in Arabs in 1322. They used it successfully in mares. While unofficial history show that an attempt was made to insemination a woman by Gerry IV.
The first ever recorded experiment was made in late 1700 to impregnate human (woman) by John Hunter. He used the sperm for her husband for the process. This concept got it’s way to US, where Dr. J. Marion Sims conducted 55 cases of insemination in North Carolina.
The American doctor William Pancoast look a new step. He impregnates a woman by the donor’s sperm without letting the patient. This process was also done by private clinics but secretly by 1940-1950. It got fame in US to such an extent that in 1951 about 20,000 children were conceived.
In 1970 the concept of sperms bank was introduced and commercialized. Soon it reached to Australia where the first ever baby “Zoe Leyland” was produced by frozen embryo. Later on this technique was adopted by elderly women from example in 1996 a 63 years old women conceived a child by donated egg in California and in 1997 a 65 years old women benefit from it and gave birth by donate eggs.
This method of treatment also reached in Pakistan with the passage of time. Dr. Farooq Nasim Bhatti, one of the Pakistani doctors established his fertility centers in Lahore and Faislabad in 1998. He produced first baby through IUI in early 2000. Now a days this method has become popular in about all the major cities of Pakistan.
